Bad Boys Ride or Die Review: A Friendship of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence

Listen to this article

If the summer entertainer’s intention is to repackage what audiences love about the 20-year-old series and inject a little more excitement, the fourth installment of this buddy cop action comedy is very successful. Bad Boys: Ride or Die returns to Miami, where Detectives Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) face another difficult challenge: corruption within the Miami Police Department and the false accusation of a deceased police inspector to a drug cartel.

Bad Boys Ride or Die Review.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die is designed as an emotional rollercoaster, starting with Mike and Christine’s (Melanie Rivard) wedding, which is interrupted by Marcus’ heart attack. Marcus manages to escape the danger zone with his wit and humor intact. He now believes he cannot die. This leads to some hilarious scenes, where Marcus dances his way through a busy Maimi intersection among speeding cars. When their friend Captain Howard (Joe Pantoliano) is accused of involvement in a cartel money laundering scheme after his murder, they are quickly put into action.

Bad Boys Ride or Die movie rating: Two and a half stars

Laurie and Burnett try to uncover the truth, but soon find themselves on the run with Mike’s son Armando (Jacob Scipio), who is incarcerated. In addition to the police, Miami gangsters are also pursuing them to collect the $5 million bounty offered if they are captured, dead or alive.

A Friendship of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.

This will be Will Smith’s return to the big screen after he infamously slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars. The role gives him a chance to show his talent as a complete entertainer once again, as the film contains many comical and emotional action scenes. It is also a chance to revive one of his most popular characters. But it is Martin Lawrence who steals the scenes, with his silliness and crazy dialogue. While Smith seems jaded at times, Lawrence’s comedic timing seems to be the best. Overall, the duo proves that, despite being nearly two decades since they first appeared as buddy cops, they’re still full of energy and have maintained an endearing on-screen friendship.

The directorial duo of Adil El Arbi and Bilal Fallah expertly navigate the story of a Miami top gangster who becomes a most wanted man. They rely on the nostalgia associated with the genre. The film doesn’t have many nerve-wracking moments, but it does offer the comfort of familiarity, with “just as much or more” being the film’s unique selling point. While not all the gags land (some were aimed at Indian audiences), this police comedy highlights that its aging stars still have it when they come out with their guns drawn.
