Whenever I try jogging or running, I often get a sharp pain on the side of my stomach after a few minutes. It becomes uncomfortable enough that I need to slow down or stop. I usually exercise shortly after eating because of my schedule. What causes this?
This sounds like a side stitch, which is common during running and may be triggered by:
- Exercising too soon after meals
- Shallow breathing
- Poor conditioning
- Starting too fast
Try:
- Waiting 1–2 hours after heavy meals before running
- Warming up gradually
- Practicing deep rhythmic breathing
- Improving core strength over time
Most side stitches are harmless and improve with conditioning.
