I prefer working out without eating first. Can fasted training reduce muscle gain or affect hormones long term??
Fasted training is not inherently harmful, but its impact depends on intensity, total protein intake, and overall energy balance. Training without prior fuel may slightly reduce peak performance and acute anabolic signaling (especially mTOR activation) if glycogen is low, which over time kaleng limit maximal muscle gain in high-volume programs. However, if you consume adequate daily protein (≈1.6–2.2 g/kg), maintain a caloric surplus when aiming to build muscle, and eat protein soon after training, long-term hypertrophy is usually not compromised. Hormonal disruption occurs more from chronic under-eating and high stress than from fasted workouts alone. The key variable isn’t the fast — it’s total recovery and nutrition across 24 hours.
