I eat almost the same meals every day because it is simple and affordable. Could this reduce gut diversity or cause nutrient issues over the long term?
Eating similar meals every day is quite common, especially when it’s practical and budget-friendly, and it doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong. However, over time, a very limited diet can reduce the variety of nutrients you get and may also impact gut microbiome diversity, since different fibers and foods support different beneficial bacteria.
If your regular meals are well-balanced—containing whole grains, protein, healthy fats, and some fruits or vegetables—you may still meet most needs. The concern arises when variety is very low, particularly in plant foods. Even small changes can help, like rotating vegetables, adding seasonal fruits, or including different types of dals, beans, or grains across the week.
You don’t need a completely different diet every day—just aim for gradual variety over time. If you notice fatigue, digestion issues, or frequent illness, it may be worth reviewing your nutrient intake or consulting a professional.
