I have noticed something interesting in my family. One of my cousins eats almost anything and rarely exercises but still remains lean. On the other hand, I try to follow a decent diet and walk daily, yet my weight fluctuates easily. Is metabolism really that different from person to person, or are there hidden lifestyle factors that most people overlook?

Body weight regulation is influenced by several biological and lifestyle variables. Genetics plays a role in how efficiently the body stores or burns calories. Some people naturally have a higher resting metabolic rate, meaning their bodies burn more energy even while at rest.
However, lifestyle factors also matter more than people realize. Small habits such as daily movement, sleep quality, stress levels, and even gut microbiome composition influence metabolism. Someone who appears inactive may actually move frequently throughout the day without structured exercise, which increases calorie expenditure.
Hormones that regulate appetite, such as leptin and ghrelin, can also behave differently among individuals. Because of this complexity, two people following similar diets may experience different results. Sustainable weight management usually depends on consistent habits rather than short-term dieting strategies.
