If someone only does walking and light bodyweight exercises, is that enough to slow aging or is strength training essential??
Walking and light bodyweight exercise are excellent for cardiovascular health, metabolic control, and longevity — they significantly reduce disease risk and support healthy aging. However, to optimally slow biological aging, especially muscle loss (sarcopenia), bone density decline, and insulin resistance, progressive resistance training becomes increasingly important with age. Muscle is a metabolic organ, and maintaining strength preserves mobility, hormonal resilience, and independence. Walking sustains health; strength training preserves capacity. Ideally, both are combined — movement for longevity, resistance for durability.
