I am in my late 20s and generally healthy, but lately I’ve noticed that climbing just two or three flights of stairs leaves me breathing heavily. I work a desk job and haven’t exercised much in the past year. I don’t smoke, but I spend most of my day sitting. Could lack of fitness alone cause this, or should I be worried?
A sedentary lifestyle can significantly reduce cardiovascular fitness, making everyday activities like climbing stairs feel more difficult. Deconditioning is a common reason for shortness of breath during physical activity.
Consider:
- Gradually increasing physical activity
- Taking daily walks
- Adding light cardio exercises
- Maintaining a healthy weight
However, if shortness of breath is worsening, occurs at rest, or is accompanied by chest pain, dizziness, or swelling, seek medical evaluation.
