I started exercising regularly about a month ago to lose weight. Surprisingly, the scale has gone up slightly instead of down. I’m eating better and working out 4–5 times a week. Is this normal, or am I doing something wrong?
This is actually a common experience when starting a fitness program.
Possible reasons include:
- Increased muscle mass
- Temporary water retention
- Improved glycogen storage in muscles
- Natural weight fluctuations
Instead of focusing only on the scale, track:
- Waist measurements
- Progress photos
- Strength gains
- How clothes fit
Often, body composition improves before major weight loss appears on the scale.
