Spanish football champions Real Madrid have expanded their top position in La Liga with another goal festival. The Royals won against CD Alavés 5-0 (3-0) on Tuesday (May 14th, 2024) and are now 17 points ahead of their arch-rivals FC Barcelona, who have to play in Almeria on Thursday.

Before the game, the Alavés players lined up for the champions, who presented the trophy for their 36th title win. Jude Bellingham then quickly opened the scoring with his 19th goal of the season (10th). Vinicius Junior twice (27th and 70th) as well as Fede Valverde (45th + 1) and Arda Güler (81st) scored further goals. The German international Toni Kroos was taken off in the second half and his teammate Antonio Rüdiger was substituted on. Real will face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final on June 1st and can then complete their 15th premier class title.

In contrast to BVB, who recently embarrassed themselves with a 3-0 defeat in Mainz in the Bundesliga with their second guard, Carlo Ancelotti almost exclusively used his top formation against Alavés – probably a much better idea than Edin Terzic’s.
Setback for Girona in the fight for second place.
In the fight for the runner-up position, the sensational team of the season, Girona FC, suffered a setback against Villarreal FC. In the 0:1 (0:0) Bertrand Traoré was the goalscorer of the evening in the 59th minute. In stoppage time, Villarreal’s Kiko Femenía received a yellow-red card, but Girona were unable to capitalize on it.
