In our entire life we all have consumed thick, juicy piece of bacon. But for most of us, we eat bacon sporadically. We keep it in the fridge for special occasions, and then, we forget about it! Today, we will tell you about how long is bacon good for in the fridge.

Many of us probably have a packet of bacon aging in our fridge till the day comes we can get to know it spoiled.

You yearn for fatty, ravishing, sweet crunches of a fully baked piece of bacon. You shuffle through the fridge and there it is, your long lost pack of bacon.

Before you tear that package like a crazy maniac, let’s answer an important question:

Does bacon get spoiled? And if so, when and how can you can get to know?

Simple answer,

Yes, of course bacon has a shelf life. But finding it out may not be as easy as reading the label. A three-stage trial is required to know for sure, which we have given below.

How Long Is Bacon Good For In The Fridge?

  • Open bacon will remain in the fridge for about 1 week before it is damaged.
  • Unopened bacon can stay in the fridge for 2 weeks or more, although always see the expiry date on the package.

How To Know Bacon is Spoiled or Not?

While there are many ways to detect stale bacon, our three senses will always guide us to determine if our bacon is still good.

1 Look.

Unpack your bacon with clean hands. To see if there is any discoloration, such as brown, grey, or green and blue. Any of these symptoms are signs of rotten bacon. Also, see small mold spots. These are an easy indicator of bacon being stale.

2 Smell.

If you smell anything other than fresh meat, such as sour, messed, rotting smell, toss immediately as your bacon is likely to have started the process of spoiling. It’s best to throw it out.

3 Touch.

If you are still not fully convinced at this point, this is the final way to check. With clean hands, touch the bacon and feel whether it is sticky on the outside. If the texture is thin, it is not. Although it will depend on the type of bacon, you will see the difference. It is not subtle.

If a week has passed since the expiry date, it is best to toss it. While it may be edible, we recommend buying a fresh pack and having zero doubts about quality.

If your bacon does not have a expiry date, use the “Look, Smell and Touch” test. If something is suspicious, throw it away.

How To Store Bacon Properly?

  • Storing bacon for optimal conservation means keeping it cool, and keeping it away from oxygen. The simple way to do this is to keep your bacon in a sealed bag in the fridge.
  • Unopened bacon can usually be refrigerated for 1-2 weeks.
  • If you are active and put it in the freezer, the bacon can last for up to six months.
  • If you cook your bacon, it can be stored in the fridge (in a sealed container) for seven days to heat later or to use in recipes throughout the week.

Freezing Bacon.

Freezing your cooked bacon is another option. When cooking, take off the bacon just before it is crunchy. Place it on a paper towel to absorb excess oil, and once completely cooled, it can be stored in a freezer bag for up to 3 months.

Remove as much air from the bag as possible to avoid freezer burning or contamination. Vacuum sealing can also be used to ensure a tight seal and reduce air penetration.

Keep in mind that keeping bacon in a freezer can change taste. Do not use for more than two months to get a better quality taste.

Depending on the type of bacon you buy, these time zones may vary slightly.

Always use the “Look, Smell and Touch” method to properly assess your bacon.
