Health experts said that nine out of 10 people have lost their eyesight to some extent during the COVID-19 pandemic in the last two years. This is because most of them have skipped their regular eye check-ups and its follow-up during the post-pandemic lockdown. So, today we will be telling you about how 90% of People’s Eyesight Was Lost To Some Extent By Corona.
Retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy or age-related macular degeneration have some or minor symptoms at the outset and are detected only by eye examination or screening. These situations have a tendency to cause serious damage to the eyes, if not taken care of on time.
Expert Reviews on Eyesight Lost By Corona.
Dr Ajay Dudani, VITEREORATINAL SURGEON, CEO, Mumbai Retina Centre, told “Unfortunately, 90 per cent of the patients have lost some degree of vision (ability to see) due to poor follow-up during the first and second wave of Covid.
Especially in patients suffering from AMD (Age Related Macular Degeneration). These patients mostly missed out on taking their intravitreal injections, due to which the diseases have increased rapidly.

Dr Chaitra Jayadev, senior vitreo-retinal consultant at Narayana Nethralaya Eye Institute, Bengaluru, said, “Due to Covid scare, we have seen a decline in patients coming for regular eye check-ups in the last 3-4 months.
This has resulted in delays in diagnosis and treatment, which may affect the ability to see in the long run.
Doctors said early detection and treatment are important to control the disease and prevent any kind of damage in the world.
The longer the clinic is closed, the worse the eye health will deteriorate.
Dr Raja Narayan, general secretary of the Vitreo Retinal Society of India, told IANS, “We should be careful during this Covid wave.
Patients should not delay the regular check up regarding macular degeneration or diabetic macular oedema, unless the patient has symptoms of Covid-19.

Dudani further said, “With the third wave, we are seeing the same pattern as in the past, as the visit of the patient (to the hospital), especially among the elderly, has reduced by about 50 per cent. Since the retina cannot be changed, not having an injection, or not following treatment, can aggravate eye disease.
Doctors also encouraged patients to take tele-consultation.
There are eye tests that can be done by any person sitting at home, the report of which can be sent to the doctor for examination and further intervention.
If patients experience symptoms such as blurred vision, sudden loss of vision or dark spots in the ocular area, they need to go for an immediate eye check-up. As these can be symptoms of diabetic retinopathy, Jayadev said.
To prevent such complications from worsening, diabetics should ensure that their sugar level remains under control.
