Expert Opinion.

As Dr. Meera Sharma is a nutrition and wellness consultant, she says that drinking hot milk at night could be one of the simple but effective habits of many people. The very warmness of the milk is relaxing to the nervous system and it helps the body to transition into a more relaxed state before sleep. Moreover, milk is a source of proteins, calcium and other significant nutrients that aid in maintaining health in general.

She also says, even though some individuals might dismiss it as an old fashioned custom, the fact remains that daily routines of bed-time rituals such as taking warm milk can teach the body to relax on its own. Most people are safe to consume it including children and the elderly, unless their digestive systems are unusually intolerant of lactose or have a particular digestive malfunction. Then lactose-free or plant-based substitutes would also be effective, too.
