I began using Triphala as part of my health regimen when I sought a natural alternative to aiding my digestion, energy and overall health. I have found this traditional herbal formula to be more than just an aid to digestion and with consistent use, and knowledge gained about Ayurveda, it has proven to be much more than I initially believed. I will share the top 10 benefits I myself learned about from Triphala, some side effects of its usage and how I incorporate this herb into my daily routine.

Triphala Ingredients.

  • Amalaki (Emblica officinalis).
  • Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica).
  • Haritaki (Terminalia chebula).

Top 10 Benefits of Triphala.

1. Supports Healthy Digestion.

The first thing I experienced was a better digestion after consuming Triphala. The Ayurvedic herbal formula functions through boosting digestive enzyme creation, better assimilation of nutrients and also a regular defecation.(1),(2)

2. Potent Antioxidant.

I also learnt of the immense antioxidants present in Triphala which aid in combating free radicals and oxidative stress in the body. It also may have an anti-inflammatory effect and promote good health.

3. Helps to maintain a healthy weight.

When I started using Triphala in my diet, I noticed that I was able to control my craving for food and follow a healthier diet. It has traditionally been used to promote weight management, energy naturally.

4. Promotes a healthy Immune System.

I found that Triphala could be useful for maintaining immunity by helping the body to expel toxins and boost immunity to disease.

5. Promotes balanced blood sugar.

I used Triphala for a few other reasons; it may help balance blood sugar and curb craving for processed foods.(3)

6. Triphala benefits for skin.

What I saw happening in my skin was that over the time there was a healthier and less dull look in my skin. Triphala can potentially reduce inflammation, add elasticity to the skin and promote its natural beauty.

7. Supports Detoxification.

Triphala is traditionally known to be detoxification promoting and the body eliminates toxins and impurities, this may improve wellbeing.

8. Cuts and prevents hair and nail breakage.

Due to its antioxidant effects, Triphala could also benefit the health of hair and nails as it helps maintain healthy cellular activities and a decrease in inflammation.

9. Promotes healthy liver function.

I was also informed that Triphala can aid in the health of liver and enhance the activity of liver enzymes and decrease accumulation of toxins in the body.

10. Improves Mental Wellbeing.

The easiest and most surprising to me was when I was consistently taking Triphala, how much lighter and calmer my mind became. It can be useful to ease stress, boost brain function and enhance mental health.

The chart highlights the potential health benefits and safety profile of Triphala, showing the strongest effects for digestive support and overall safety & tolerance, with high benefits for gut microbiota balance and antioxidant activity, and a moderate yet meaningful impact on detox support, emphasizing Triphala’s traditional Ayurvedic role in promoting digestive wellness, gut health, and overall wellbeing when used responsibly.

Side Effects of Triphala.

1. Nausea.

People can get nausea in some cases after consuming Triphala either because of its taste or adaptation to the herb in the body. I found that, at times, eating with it helped decrease this feeling.

2. Diarrhea.

Because of its natural laxative properties, excess use of Triphala or over a longer period of time might lead to diarrhea.

3. Stomach Upset.

I found that, in some sensitive people, taking Triphala on an empty stomach will cause stomach cramps or discomfort.

4. Heartburn.

Increased gastric acid production after consumption of Triphala may cause some to suffer from heartburn.

5. Headache.

Sometimes, headaches may develop during the body’s detoxification or because of sensitivity towards the herbs.

How I Take Triphala Powder?

  • I add 1 tsp of Triphala powder to 1 cup water.
  • I allowed the mixture to sit for ~ 5 minutes.
  • Then I stir it well, so it will dissolve.
  • Typically, I take it 1x a day, empty stomach.
  • Occasionally I put honey or lemon juice in to make it taste better.
  • I like taking it at night before bed with digestive support, as well as using it to support my cells.
